the site is located on the estuary and within the rural landscape just east of cahersiveen, and sits into its natural backdrop with a large mountain range the main feature beyond the estuary to the north. the sensitive nature of the site was given careful consideration during the design process, and the design proposed to place a single storey extension adjacent to the existing dwelling that is in scale with the existing built form, and appropriate to the topography of the site. the orientation of the proposed extension affords the best views from the new main living area to the mountains to the north. this delivers good visual amenity to its inhabitants, while respecting the need to avoid any potential for negative impact on the existing rural landscape with the careful siting of this new built form. the extension is sited to ensure that both it and the existing kitchen/dining spaces can enjoy good views across the estuary to the mountains, access to a common patio area, as well as orientating towards afternoon and evening sun. the most forward part of the annexe extension also sits 450mm into the site in order to allow the space to further engage with the receiving environment. currently under construction, it is due for completion in summer 2011.
